Join me for a snorkelling adventure and explore Scotland’s incredible underwater world. We’ll float above a colourful underwater forest and I’ll point out fish, crabs and other marine creatures in their natural habitat. You’ll learn about diverse marine environments, fascinating sea life, and the importance of conservation.

Snorkelling is fun, accessible and easy to learn. Floating in seawater is also a mindful and relaxing experience, helping you disconnect from the world above and connect with nature - all without heavy scuba gear or extensive training.

Based on the stunning Berwickshire coast in South East Scotland within the Berwickshire Marine Reserve, I offer personalised Snorkelling adventures for all ages and abilities - Genine

Discover Snorkelling Perfect for beginners and those with little experience. Learn to snorkel from the beach and explore the shallows of Coldingham Bay, spotting marine life.

Guided Snorkelling For those with some experience, I offer tailored sessions at Coldingham Bay or nearby St Abbs and Eyemouth. Focus on exploring different habitats, identifying marine life, improving techniques, or picking up UK snorkelling tips.

Snorkpooling A fun, accessible session for water-confident children (ages 6-9) and nervous adults. I run these sessions in shallow, sheltered pools where younger children can stand.

I keep groups small (max 6 people) for a low environmental impact and a more personal experience. Full kit hire is included, with 5mm wetsuits and snorkelling gear.

I offer private one-to-one and group sessions for families and friends (2-6 people) I also schedule open group sessions where individuals to join a group of up to 6 . Additionally, I can organise sessions for schools, youth groups, community organisations, and corporate teams. If available, I may travel outside Berwickshire - past sessions have been held in South Fife, Dunbar & North Berwick.

Sessions run daily from June to September, scheduled around tides. Let me know your preferred session type, number of people, ages of any children, and availability, such as weekends or weekdays.

Snorkelling Adventures

DISCOVER SNORKELLING
For beginners or those with less experience

Are you a beginner, or have you tried snorkelling abroad and want to have a go in the UK?

Accompanied by an experienced and patient instructor:-

learn the basics, how to use a mask, snorkel and fins
communicate using hand signals - safety and sea creatures
learn how to clear water from your mask and snorkel
practice how to position yourself in the water and use fins

After learning the basics and gaining confidence in the water, we'll:-

explore the shallow rocky and sandy areas, looking for and identifying marine life
for those that want to give it a go - learn how to duck dive and swim underwater

The session includes full safety briefings, an introduction to the Berwickshire Marine Reserve, a marine life presentation and a sea creature spotter sheet for younger children. I’ll capture some memories and marine life with an underwater camera and share these with you.

With up to 1 hour in the water, allow 3 hours from arrival to finish. Sessions will be from the beach in Coldingham Bay, Berwickshire, between June - September.

GUIDED SNORKELLING
For those with some snorkelling experience who are comfortable in the open sea

Do you have snorkelling experience? Want to explore some different sites in Scotland? Need to refresh your skills or build your confidence? Want to know where or when to look for specific marine life and explore different habitats?

With the comfort of an experienced snorkelling guide to plan your session, I can:-

take you to some great snorkelling spots to explore different habitats
help you find and identify marine life, when and where to look for certain species like Nudibranchs (sightings not always guaranteed!)
refresh your snorkelling skills
build your confidence to feel comfortable exploring with a buddy
teach you how to duck dive using a weight belt
share my knowledge of local sites, conditions and tides and how to plan a snorkel
give you tips and techniques for safe UK snorkelling

We can explore the shallow rocky reef or float above the kelp forests and sandy areas, looking for marine life. For a more active snorkel, we can swim over deeper water from point to point with some duck diving practice using a weight belt. Fancy an early morning snorkel or exploring at dusk by torchlight?

Guided sessions typically take place in Coldingham Bay or other nearby sites accessed from the shore in Eyemouth and St Abbs.

I can tailor the session to you, so let me know what you’d like to focus on, and I can suggest specific sites, dates and times. Some sites are tide-dependent, and local conditions mean that I can't guarantee we can always get to a specific site. If I have availability I can travel to run sessions outside Berwickshire by request.

SNORKPOOLING
For water confident children and nervous adults

Do you have a keen young marine biologist in the family, or lack the confidence to put on a mask on and put your face in the water?

Snorkpooling combines "snorkelling" and "rockpooling." Using full snorkelling kit, fins optional, it offers a shallow-water experience in sheltered rockpools or calm, shallow areas. This makes it accessible for young children, nervous adults and less confident swimmers who feel more comfortable knowing they can stand.

This session provides a safe, controlled environment to explore and spot marine life without venturing into deeper waters, making it a great introduction to snorkelling.

Up to 1 hour in the water; allow 3 hours from arrival to finish. Sessions run from Coldingham Bay, between June and September.

Minimum age 6.

Genine

Hello, I’m Genine, based in Eyemouth on the Berwickshire coast of Scotland. Passionate about marine life, conservation, and the environment, I love sharing my knowledge and teaching others about the importance of our seas through snorkelling adventures.

I grew up in the Midlands, far from the sea, but always fascinated by nature. My childhood was spent exploring fields, playing in the dirt, watching birds, and studying insects. Family trips to the seaside sparked my curiosity about the ocean, though opportunities to explore were rare. Some of my earliest memories are of wondering what the worm casts were on Blackpool Beach. That changed in 2011 when I learned to scuba dive in Indonesia. I was hooked and went on to dive in Thailand, the Red Sea, Borneo, Vietnam, the Philippines, Belize, and Costa Rica, often volunteering for conservation projects while on holiday.

In 2014, after moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, I discovered UK scuba diving through a chance encounter with a local dive club. Exploring the North Sea felt like rediscovering nature as a child - its hidden habitats teeming with life. I frequently dived in the St Abbs & Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve and became a PADI Divemaster, assisting instructors and guiding divers.

In 2019, I took a break from my User Researcher career to volunteer as a marine ranger for the Berwickshire Marine Reserve. Living and working within the community, I helped protect and promote the St Abbs & Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve, collaborating with local users and organisations. Here, I took up snorkelling more seriously. Free from heavy dive gear, I could explore the shallows with just a mask, snorkel, and fins - often spotting as much marine life as I did while diving. I began sharing snorkelling experiences with others, introducing curious newcomers to the wonders beneath the surface.

Since 2020, I’ve been teaching and guiding snorkelling in the area, helping people discover the beauty of UK waters. Each session is unique and planned around tides and weather. Seeing the excitement of first-time snorkellers is incredibly rewarding, and I stay curious, always learning and exploring with each snorkel. I take pride in my organisation and ensuring you leave with a memorable experience and new knowledge.

I’m a BSAC-qualified snorkel instructor and PADI Divemaster with lifesaving and first-aid qualifications. Fully insured, I personally plan, organise, and guide all sessions.

What a great 2024 for our Snorkel club adventures, sharing our love of the underwater world as a community of likeminded folk 💙

Starting with a @bsacdivers Snorkel Diver course over the Winter and some duck dive practice in the pool. Followed in the Spring by some wonderful underwater experiences exploring our home site Coldingham, here in the marine reserve.

We ventured further afield Beyond Berwickshire with a trip across to North Argyll, and day trips exploring South Fife and East Lothian, part of the @scottishwildlifetrust Snorkel trails. Celebrated the @berwickshiremarinereserve 40th anniversary at St Abbs with a snorkel and harbour jump, a Bioblitz for the @seabirdcentre, searching for sea slugs as part of @marinequestdive Annual Scottish Nudibranch festival, then some dusk snorkelling as we reached the Autumn months 🔦🦞

It’s that time of year for our club sunset snorkel 🌅🤿 A lovely evening exploring as the light fades, using torches to guide us as it gets darker.

Some creatures are more active at dusk and night. You are more likely to see Lobsters roaming and large shoals of fish. One wee one was spotted under the rocks on the way back 🔦🦞 #lobster #sunsetsnorkel

Great to get back in! Even more so on a beautiful sunny, warm calm day, sharing the underwater world with an enthusiastic and clever 8 year old showing me how Snorkpooling should be done! In no more than 2ft and putting our faces in rockpools with sharp eyesight we found lots of sea creatures 🦀 🐟 Shanny, Sandeels, Juvenile fish, Edible and Green shore crabs, plus some very camouflaged Sea Scorpions and Flounders too 💙🤿👌🏻

Summer feels like it is going far too quick ☀️ With a glimpse of Autumnal weather, a morning chill in the air, strong winds, and the woolly hat & socks to hand - but it’s not over yet! A fantastic full weekend sharing, exploring and educating people about the Berwickshire Marine Reserve and the wonderful habitats and life that live here @berwickshiremarinereserve

This week marked the 40th anniversary of the Berwickshire Marine Reserve, setup in August 1984 by the local community with the foresight to know this area, its habitats and inhabitants needed conserving.

To this day the community and a charity work together to educate, raise awareness and promote responsible use through codes of conduct to continue to manage and protect this special area of water. It provides such important habitats for marine life, an area for people to enjoy water based activities as well as supporting livelihoods of many people that live and work in this area too.

I love introducing and sharing how wonderful our UK marine environment is with locals and visitors through snorkelling.

Seeing and exploring beneath the surface with our own eyes helps us understand, grow to love and ultimately want to strive to protect the habitats and marine life that lives here.

For some people, the importance of conserving and protecting our waters is so we as humans can continue to enjoy the clear, vibrant water, focusing more on ourselves, which is also ok.

Firstly we need to ensure the habitats and marine life can survive and thrive without us having too big an impact. We are just visitors and observers into this world, we don’t belong there and have to respect this 🐟🦀🦞

Enjoyed an early morning snorkel.

A 1-1 birthday gift for a nature loving lady, we enjoyed the peace and quiet with a slightly cooler feel. Firstly we swam out to float over the kelp then a bimble back through the Thongweed jungle peering into the barnacle covered rocks, finishing with a swim across the sand back to the beach. Lots of life to observe, including the Ballan wrasse in their usual spots and lots of Shannys and Corkwing wrasse too. Flatfish hiding and we got our eye in close to see the barnacles feeding, with all 3 most commonly sighted crabs, edible, shore and velvet swimming crabs. Lots of juvenile fish and only 2 moon jellyfish 👀 the visibility was a little poor nearer the shore, perhaps a mix of plankton and runoff from the rain , it soon cleared 😀🐟🦀👌🏻🤿💙

A week of 2 halves 🤿👌🏻 / 🌊🏄A calm clear start to the week for introducing people to the beautiful underwater world of Scotland , followed by 3 days of surf. It is pleasant for the surfers to catch some waves whilst it’s warm ☀️ Now after a crazy weather day 💨🌧️ back to flat calm just in time to share and inspire more people at this weekends celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Berwickshire Marine Reserve @berwickshiremarinereserve

We were delighted to be invited along to the @seabirdcentre annual BioBlitz by the Sea to do a Snorkpooling survey. Recording all the species we could identify in the intertidal zone as the tide came in to add to tally of all the species spotted on land, air and sea over the entire day. We found over 40 species including lots of different species of seaweed 🦀🐟🦞🤿💙 Thanks to some of the snorkel club that came along to take part and support 👌🏻

Joined by Fife based artist @larascouller whose interest in Crustaceans led her to come and see them here, underwater to observe them in their natural environment, as inspiration for a new project 🦀🦞 what a great session, an hour in the water, we were both inspired!

Although we didn’t see as many crabs as we usually do here and the only lobster we observed sadly not in its natural environment, we still managed to see all 3 of the most common species , Velvet Swimming crabs, Edible crab and Shore crabs.

Another Crustacean - Barnacles, often overlooked, due to their size and abundance we usually swim right over them and don’t look, but they are as interesting and beautiful once you get your eye in to see especially when you see them feeding

What have we been seeing in the marine reserve this past 2 weeks? The highlight has to be the amount of Sandeels in the bay. At one point we were surrounded by them, the juvenile fish are getting bigger and identifiable by species now as Pollock, Cod, Coley. The Sea scorpions and Flat fish seem to have been come out of hiding (or have they always been there, camouflaged we just didn’t spot them!) Lots of Shannys on the barnacle covered rocks and hiding in the cracks too.

Not as many crabs about to see maybe it’s their time to hide 🦀

Not forgetting all the wonderful jellyfish and jellies. The moon jelliyfish are especially abundant right now. A few blue jellyfish, but no sightings of a Lions Mane whilst snorkelling yet, but they are out there! 🪼 Enjoying all the beautiful and colourful seaweed and kelps to swim through and above keeping the sea creatures sheltered from predators and also providing food for others, as well as protecting the beach.

1000s of Sandeels and Herring sp. possibly sprats in the water this week. Hard to get through…

It’s been the time for spotting more jellies, including some Crystal jellyfish. Lots of large flatfish, and large schools of Sandeels in the water. Some huge Ballan wrasse as well as a sighting of a Conger Eel in the same spot that we saw one in previous years, possibly the same one, looking a lot bigger!

A full on fun packed sunshiney weekend (with some showers) introducing more people to the wonders of the underwater world. Some excellent conditions this last week with the sea calm and clear with so much life to see. I’m looking forward to sharing it with more people this week ☀️🤿

A lovely few days spent with my family who are here visiting for their Summer holiday. Lovely to take my 7 and 5 year old nieces and brother snorkelling, to show them how wonderful it is and how much you can see in the UK. We saw 100s of fish, plenty of crabs and Sandeels too, as well a few sea slugs and jellyfish 🦀🐟🪼thanks Steve for the thick wetsuits @stvedassurf

We had a right treat our very own boat trip with Iain @marinequestdive exploring around St Abbs head to enjoy the scenery, seabirds and looking out for dolphins and whales 🐬 thank you 🙏🏼 (a rare couple of photos of me in there too 😊)

Highlights of spotting the Ballan wrasse and flatfish, plus some Sandeels too 🐟🐟🐟👌🏻The boys were spot on with their hand signals to tell each other what they’ve seen without making a noise, avoiding disturbing the fish 🤙🏼 great skills!

This weekend between us we spotted all the marine life and seaweeds we learn about in our briefing before we go snorkelling, 🐟🦀including a few large Ballan wrasse and a beautiful crystal jellyfish too, they look like lace.

One day there were 100s of jellyfish, mainly moon jellyfish and the next day no moon jellyfish 🤷‍♀️ you never know what you are going to find until you look below the surface, that’s all part of the adventure 🤿 sea temperature a balmy 13c and the visibility was excellent 💙👌🏻

With the sky overcast and the nights drawing in, it felt like a very Autumnal evening last night for our weekly snorkel club meetup.

However a peek below the surface revealed a very summery and colourful world below and with the sea temperature a balmy 13c it was a very pleasant session 👌🏻🐟🤿💙

We swam out a little further and explored some deeper sections by torchlight to search the seabed and bring out the colours even more. A bimble back into the shallows around the rocks and through the thongweed always feels good like floating through an underwater jungle. We were delighted to see so much and the sea was so clear too. The crabs were very active as they usually are when the tide starts to flood - they know they have a few dark hours ahead to feed 🦀 🦀 🦀

Earlier this week we spent 2 days exploring ‘Beyond Berwickshire’ We snorkelled some new sites in South Fife and East Lothian.

The sea and weather were kind to us and it was lovely to see some different habitats and marine life too. The seabed is a bit siltier here but was surprisingly clear, we saw a lot more shrimps, razor clams and cockle shells. Sandeels were also at all sites which was a good sign.

We also came across many moon jellyfish and a few large groups of them stranded and dying on the seabed. The crabs were having a feast 🦀 #snorkelclub #moonjellyfish #crabs

Always lovely to explore ‘Beyond Berwickshire’ we headed away from our comfort zone to explore the underwater world of the Forth @scottishwildlifetrust South Fife snorkel sites.

Not just to see different things, but to use our conscious mind to research, plan, think and also take a risk to get in somewhere we haven’t explored before. It’s so easy to become comfortable with returning to the same place and easily lose some sense of adventure and risk. This year I planned some more adventure snorkel days and trips in Scotland with a group of more experienced snorkellers.

Exploring new places allows you to activate all your senses, consciously feeling different movements in the water, seeing and hearing different things to keep our blue minds active and renewed #bluemind

A beautiful gentle drift out and around the rocky reef and boulders of Kinghorn Bay. The water was glassy calm and the air very still and warm as the sun tried to break the cloud. The water not as salty as the open sea (yes we did taste it!) and an eerie but interesting sensation of swimming through mixes of fresh and salt water to add to the sensory experience.

A fin back in against a gentle ebbing tide guided by 1000s of Sandeels that were being followed by circling Arctic terns above.

Joined by a lovely family of 4 for a Snorkpooling session, including a budding 8yr old underwater photographer who brought along his camera. Here’s what the family had to say…

‘It was an educational, wonderfully memorable and inspiring morning. Seeing the kids being little adventurers and learning new fun skills. Genine gave a great explanation and instructions, we felt safe and that the session was graded appropriately and guided by an expert. Genine was very flexible with us all for bringing along the dog too 🐕

The children said… ‘We saw so much beautiful sea life, it felt easy and I was helped a lot’

We got appropriately layered up for a sunny but slightly breezier Summer day - the children wearing 8mm wetsuit on their core to keep them warm enough to stay in the water longer.

We learnt how to snorkel before exploring the shallows of Coldingham Bay. Spotting everything from our spotter sheets, except the starfish (which was probably there, but hiding under the rocks) swam with hundreds of Sandeels and passed a few beautiful blue jellyfish too.

We learnt the safety and sea creature hand signals👌🏼✋🏼🤙🏼 including how to communicate to each other if we saw a larger stinging jellyfish so that we could all avoid swimming into their tentacles.

What great conditions for introducing people to UK snorkelling 🤿 and for one lady her first ever time snorkelling.

Everyone after practicing or reviewing some basic skills, sea safety and learning some hand signals were comfortable exploring with their buddies. An hour max time in the water, everyone was delighted to have had a lovely experience and to have swam over a variety of habitats and to see so much, then to be able to share this with everyone else afterwards🐟🦀 Thank you for joining me and for the delicious homemade cakes afterwards too 💙

What have we been seeing this last week in the marine reserve? So much!

The settled Summer seas are now thriving with life and activity and it’s a joy to put our heads in knowing there will be lots to observe

After sorting through 100s of photos I’ve narrowed down to 10 highlights, I might need to do another post 😀

We have seen both the Ballan wrasse, (first photo) Corkwing wrasse, lots of blue jellyfish, comb ‘disco’ jellys, sea gooseberries, moon, cross jellyfish, plus lots of stalked jellyfish.

All 3 most commonly sighted crabs 🦀🦀🦀 velvet, edible and shore

Lots of juvenile fish in small shoals - likely Pollock, Coley and Cod, plus thousands of Sandeels

Urchins, Shannys, Sea Scorpions and the most variety of Nudibranchs (aka Sea Slugs I’ve ever seen in one spot. There are 1000s of one particular species that once you see you can’t unsee!

Today another pipefish was spotted in the kelp too - amazing! 🐟🦀👌🏻🤿💙
